From the pen of Mark Laporta, the new young adult novel from chickadee prince wins some originality points right from the off simply by not blowing up the whole world before we start. Young adult literature seems to have gotten a little hung up recently on the metaphorical anger teenagers have with the unfair broken world around them by depicting every apocalypse going. Meanwhile ‘Heart of Earth’ may lose some of its readers by being a bit too far from this and the average teenage life. For you see in it we follow young Derek Dixon, a boy whose body has changed into something unrecognisable that is clumsy and awkward, he’s found that girls are a mystery that leave him tripping over himself, his people skills are all out of whack and his parents are now unfeeling prison guards who were never young and will never understand him. Now I ask how is any teenager supposed to relate to this?

What is Broken Promise by Jen Wylie

Broken Promise is the third part of the Broken ones series, a series I must confess I haven’t been actually been reading, or even aware of thus far in my life. But how bad an idea can it be, after all everyone always says a series is at its peak on the third entry. So I figured using my keen mind and hard earned English degree I would be able to piece together the bits I’ve missed and let you know if this one is any good.

What is Transfixion?

Ok before I begin I feel I should say that I haven’t read any young adult fiction since Harry’s greatest problem was working out who left the graffiti in his school text book. Why this was the plot of a book I can’t remember, maybe he was just annoyed it wasn’t the fun kind that kept you amused in class, you know like genitalia and giant moustaches or the chains that lead you from page to page before typically ending in a generic insult with some the harshest language known to a teenager. Anyway what I am saying is that I don’t know why hunky diamond encrusted vampires are now labelled as different and why that means they have to fight each other in a skeletal city in some kind of hungry game. So it was with a bit of trepidation that I started reading Transfixion by J. Giambrone.
